Epiphone Les Paul Ultra-II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Faded Cherry Sunburst

This review is from: Epiphone Les Paul Ultra-II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Faded Cherry SunburstThe Finish is beautiful. It's half the weight of the real thing. Pickups sound like a PRS more than PAF. Not quite as lowdown and funky as the real thing. When you add the acoustic pickup, then it takes on that LP sound. If you like using a slide, the active pickup screams even at low volume. In fact if you like to use a slide or your fingers, you can't beat this thing. I did leave the battery in the active pickup on, and it went dead in a couple of days, my fault. Just remove the battery or shut the knob on the back off. This is a unique guitar that will take you places sonicly that you can't go with anything else. I use it with two cords and a high end 300 watt stereo tube amp and throw in some drive. All I can say is Wow. No, it is not a 40 year old LP, nothing sounds like that only the real thing. For a modern sound you can take to some real funky places, this guitar can't be beat....

This review is from: Epiphone Les Paul Ultra-II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Faded Cherry SunburstThe Les Paul Ultra-II is a different beast. This is the original ultra, i purchased one two Augusts ago with a little maintenance it has defeated many of my other pricey guitars. The sound is a bit murky like fellow Les Pauls before it, you can assume though a nice hard driven rock sound, and a cutting edge solo tone. The treble and rhythm feature such a strong contrast against each other. The rhythm sounds good enough to be used on clean channel unlike many other Les Pauls. The gold alnico humbuckers and tuning pegs really add to a nicer interpretation along with the stylized burst scattered body. The guitars strap peg may fall out entirely, easy to fix. With multiple sessions put down on this guitar i find no reason why not to buy it, it endures well and plays as well as it endures! I own eight guitars (some even being the elusive Stevie Ray Vaughan sig Fender, Zakk Wylde Gibson LP, Ibanez RG, Another Epi LP ect), and have played with many guitarists/musicians. They all note how well this guitar performs. Althought it's not for sale currently i recommend you search a Guitar Center, you can find one around 500$ or less. This Epi competes well beyond the degrees of fellow higher companioned Gibson....

BOSS Micro BR BR-80 Digital Recorder

This review is from: BOSS Micro BR BR-80 Digital RecorderI'm really digging this little recorder. I've had it for about 2 weeks now and once I got past its limitations I'm really starting to use it a lot. I've tried a few portable multitracks over the past year (Micro BR 4, Boss BR800, & Zoom R8 to name a few) and they just didn't click with me. The R8 came awfully close to winning the battle - I still have it and may hold onto it, but so far the more time I spend learning to use the BR-80 the more it seems to be the right tool for me. Long story short: If you're looking for an awesome practice tool and something to quickly jot your ideas down with or simply just create a rough outline of a riff or song before it disappears from your brain completely, definitely check the BR-80 out. If you're looking for professional sounding recordings to share with the world or hoping this will replace your current DAW and plugins, go get your head checked! A $299 device that's slightly larger than an iPod isn't going to make that happen. At least not in 2011.Pros: - The size. It's a no brainer when comparing to other units. I can keep this in my backpack at all times and have it out and on at a moment's notice.- I'm a long time Boss GT floor board user and have grown to despise the higher gain COSM models, but the amps on the BR80 aren't all that bad. Still very mid-rangey but if you lay off the gain, play with the eq, and dial back your guitar's volume knob about 15-20% the higher gain models can sound really good. Cleans are great.- Battery life seems great. 6 hours with regular batteries, about 3-4 on my rechargables so far.- Less is more. Having used Sonar and ProTools for years now it's nice to just plug into something, hit record, and go to town. Aside from the learning curve nothing really gets in the way of getting drafts of your ideas onto this thing. If you don't like it (I didn't at first) keep at it and READ THE MANUAL. Give it a fighting chance. Burn some calories. You might be pleasantly surprised. I sure am.- For what they are (remember this is a small little $299 rectangle running on 2 AA batteries), the drum sounds aren't all that bad. You have 8 kits to choose from and there should be something that is at least close enough for what most users will have in mind.- The onboard mics are great. I live in NYC and it's fun sometimes to switch them on when I'm walking around and capture random audio in the city. They're very sensitive to wind as well as anything that might be in their way at all (such as fingers near them if you're holding it while recording).- Eband is really cool. I'm not too crazy about the backup band stuff but there's a drum folder full of drum-only loops that are much more realistic sounding and fun to jam to.Cons:- Scroll scroll scroll... we live in a world of menus and this device is no exception. You can pretty much get all of the essential operations done without too much scrolling, but when it comes to editing tracks or punching in be prepared to get your button pressing and thumb dialing on.- If you like odd meters (which I do) and want to use something other than metronome patterns for rhythms be prepared to invest some time importing your own midi loops to this thing. Also on the odd meter note, you can change up time signatures and tempos in the rhythm track in each song.. this is something I wasn't able to do on other units, at least not with a lot of extra effort bouncing tracks and whatnot.- You need to download software from BOSS (it also comes on the included memory card) to convert tracks to .wav if you plan on importing them to your PC (and vice versa). You can't just plug in via USB and drag-n-drop. Totally lame. Just like the total wankers they use on their painful demo videos, Boss is really behind the times with this aspect. Come on, it's 2011... go with the standard, man! I'm learning to deal with it but overall it's just another pain in the arse step getting in the way of creativity.- The reverbs are horrible. If you use it for anything more than a very subtle enhancement it's very sterile and sounds incredibly "pixilated" (that's the best word I can think of to describe it). This is disappointing but not a complete deal breaker if you're just using this as a sketchpad. If you're looking for lush verbs on your solo acoustic guitar tracks, fugeddabaddit. I wish I could take my Zoom R8 reverb and drop it into the BR80.- No power supply. Not a big deal if you have a lot of rechargeable batteries but be prepared to shell out more cash for that as well as a carrying case of some sort. - The little nubs on the navigation dial aren't the most comfortable on thumbs when you have to scroll through a large amount of data. The only real issue I've had so far is dropouts while recording and getting a DRIVE BUSY! error message. I'm positive this was due to the crappy memory card I inserted (it comes with a 2G but I wanted more space). I bought a new higher speed card and have had zero problems since. If you're going to be lugging this around a lot I'd seriously consider buying a case of some sort for it. I bought the BOSS sleeve/pouch kit and although it's a bit spendy it gives a really nice solid feel to the recorder and buttons (and protects the thing, of course). I've been using BOSS products for over 20 years and never had a problem due to their "built like a tank" approach. I'd like to think the BR-80 will live up to that but it's too early to make a fair assessment. Unlike any of my BOSS stompboxes I would be weary of knocking this thing around too much. Protect your investment and BUY A CASE. $40 seems like a rip off and it kind of is, but it's much better than potentially paying $299 for a replacement unit. This BR80 is definitely a keeper in my opinion. If you're looking for a quick, portable, decent sounding solution to document the music ideas in your head you should definitely consider trying this out. If you're looking to c...

AXL Mayhem FireAx Electric Guitar, Black

This review is from: AXL Mayhem FireAx Electric Guitar, BlackI was never looking into this guitar i was looking into B.C Rich's Red bevel warlock guitar, but as i was going to purchase it, it sold out. out of desperation i frantically searched for a new stylish guitar and i saw this one and quickly ordered it. When it got here i was happy playing it but while spending time with it i soon realized its potential. The floating tremelo works like a dream when using the whammy bar for certain songs, the frets are jumbo as advertised, the neck is thin which allows me to go up and down the fret board with ease for songs like roulette or aces high, the strings i really didn't care for because i replaced them with Ernie ball power slinky which is great, the pickups are nice but i feel as if i want to replace them with something a bit stronger, though EMG did out do themselves with it, the clamps on the bridge come to good use and enhance the tone while playing (ive played with and without them and its better with) I love the shape, the pick up switch is very useful when switching from metal to acoustic but can cause a ruckus if your settings or amp is a bit too sensitive. (one pro and con of the pick up is that it hears EVERYTHING so excess noise has to be cleaned if your sloppy on the fret board or just movement period) It is an overall great guitar that id love to buy again (in a different color)...

This review is from: AXL Mayhem FireAx Electric Guitar, BlackThe look of the guitar is the best part of this. The pickups have little tone and the construction is poor. The wood used is subpar and the tuners feel loose. This is on the lower end of entry level guitars and if I had it to do over I would have bought a guitar with a better name in the industry so I could find someone else who would buy this.Disappointed...

This review is from: AXL Mayhem FireAx Electric Guitar, BlackI loved the looks of this guitar the second I saw it, and the other reviewer seemed to really know his stuff, and for the price i figured why not give it a shot. I love it, as the first reviewer mentioned the pick-ups hear everything, so any sloppy movement on the neck comes out of the amp. Not a big deal if you ask me, it forces me to be a better player. My only true gripe here is that in the picture it looks to have a green edge, however it does not, solid black for sure, I would have loved to have that green edge, but after spending some time with this guitar, its a keeper!...

Dean Custom Zone Solid Body Electric Guitar, 2 Humbuckers Florescent Pink

This review is from: Dean Custom Zone Solid Body Electric Guitar, 2 Humbuckers Florescent PinkI bought this neon pink Dean Custom used on eBay for[...]. Pink wasn't my first choice in color, but I couldn't pass it up for the price. But when I got it, I was stoked. The guitar looks hot! I've been playing for almost 4 years and own a Jackson Kelly JS30KE, Squire Strat, Carlson SG1, and a couple Paul Stanley PS series Washburns for show. I play mainly rock... KISS, AC/DC, Def Lep and a bunch of other 80's Butt-Rock tunes and blues and this guitar is perfect for that. Sounds better than my Squire and stock Kelly (until I put in a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck in the bridge). The action was very low, no fret buzz, tuners feel cheap and might be replaced w/Sperzels soon, but they work. I hear using the whammy bar takes it out of tune quickly, but since I rarely use the whammy, I wouldn't know so I don't care. This guitar can be purchased for [...] online and retails for [...]. If you can pick this up for [...] or cheaper, you got a deal! I would recommend this guitar for any beginner or novice, or anyone that wants a nice sounding guitar at a killer price. Way better than the Squire Stratocaster that most beginners (like me) usually get for a first guitar. Neck feels smooth, no sharp fret edges that I've noticed. No inlays either... that took getting used to, but looks slicker than snot! Feels sturdy too. This guitar RAWKS... go buy one....

Yamaha PSR-170 61-Key Portable Electronic Keyboard

This review is from: Yamaha PSR-170 61-Key Portable Electronic KeyboardI bought this for my wife because I didn't think she would stick with it. She is having fun with it, and it has a lot of neat extras. Great for beginners, but more advanced music needs will need more.If you're buying a keyboard for a kid or someone that isn't a professional, this is a great deal....

This review is from: Yamaha PSR-170 61-Key Portable Electronic KeyboardWhat a great keyboard! I am learning to play the piano in my spare time! The built-in lessons really work. I am learning at my own pace. I played back all 100 songs and put a star by the songs I want to learn. There are a lot of great songs built in. By the time I get through all of them I should be able to read music and play the piano very well. I am on the 5th song and it is easier with each new song I learn. I love lesson #2 for the right and left hand. You have to hit the right keys for the keyboard to work and after finishing the song the keyboard tells you how well you did.. either "OK", "Good", "Very Good", or "Excellent!" There are all kinds of voices, styles, songs and the DJ mode that make it fun and entertaining. I haven't learned all of it yet. I also like the fact that the keyboard is very portable so that I can take it places easily. I ordered the keyboard with a stand and AC adapter which are essentials. This keyboard is not touch sensitive which I think makes it easier to learn. The only small complaint is that the song book does not have the words to the songs in it which I have complained to Yamaha about. The PSR-170 is an affordable, versatile, quality product. I would buy it again without hesitation....

This review is from: Yamaha PSR-170 61-Key Portable Electronic KeyboardI bought this keyboard for the purpose of learning to play the piano. It is a great instrument, lots of fun, and makes learning a pleasure! The value and quality are more than I expected. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this item again....
